ADVENTURE FILM ACADEMY 2008
Supported by Skillset, BBC and Visual Impact
This is the 6th year of the highly acclaimed AFA (Adventure Film Academy, formerly the Extreme Film School) and a chance to work with some of the top professionals in adventure film-making who have worked on many BAFTA and EMMY winning films including Touching the Void.
This year the AFA will be split into two courses:
AFA Pro
A new intense course for film professionals supported by Skillset and limited to 6 places.
Designed to cover a wide range of topics important to the adventure filmmaker - planning, camera, sound, health & safety, location problems, editing and rigging. A mix of classroom and outdoor practical. Please download a full provisional course synopsis, costs and application form here:

Price £250 includes B&B accommodation (from 16th to 22nd inclusive – 7 nights), tuition and equipment. Not including lunch, dinner, drinks, travel or insurance.
AFA Standard
Over 450 people have so far attended these workshops, producing over 150 2-minute short films. These ‘shorts’ have been shown to huge audiences - prime time BBC1, festivals all over the world including Banff, Telluride and Trento, and a variety of web sites such a youTube where ‘No Cycling’ received 678,000 views!
The Academy attracts a wide range of talent:
Film industry professionals wanting to exercise their skills and learn more about adventure film making.
Film students who want to learn new skills.
Adventurers, mountaineers and extreme sports enthusiasts who want to learn how to record their exploits and make broadcast-quality films.
18% of those who have attended AFA now work within the film industry.
Choose individual modules or sign up for the whole week. The program comprises a choice of four workshops on film making and editing, followed by the 48-Hour Film Marathon during the Festival week.
The AFA Standard is made up of two parts.
1. WORKSHOPS (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)
Monday - Introduction to making an Adventure Film (part 1: the camera) with Mark Batey
Tuesday - Introduction to making an Adventure Film (part 2: editing) with Mark Batey
Wednesday… Either
Camera master class - filming adventure using dv cameras, with Keith Partridge
Or
Editing master class with Matt Burke / Dan Hodge
2. 48 HOUR FILM MARATHON (Wednesday evening to Friday evening)
The challenge - make a two-minute film on an adventure, extreme sport or a subject related to the mountains (cultural, political, natural history, agricultural or industrial) in 48 hours. The films will be shown at the Festival, judged and prizes awarded.

Each of the three workshops cost £80 and for those wanting both of the 2-day ‘Intro course’ there is a special offer 2-day ticket at £120 (a saving of £40).
The 48 hour film marathon fee is £80 and can be purchased by phone or online.
The full 5-day AFA is available for £250 (a saving of £70).
